How to Open an SKB Backup and Recover a SketchUp Model

Learn what an SKB file is, where it appears, and how it can help when the main SketchUp model stops opening.

An SKB file is SketchUp's backup copy of a model. If the main SKP file stopped opening, the SKB version may be the fastest way to get back to a working model without rebuilding anything.

What an SKB File Contains

In practice, the SKB file is usually an earlier saved state of the same project. It is not a different format for a different workflow. It exists as a fallback in case the latest save went wrong.

SketchUp Help notes that backups are usually stored next to the main file and appear with the .skb extension on Windows. That is why the original folder is the first place to inspect when the main model stops opening.

How to Recover from an SKB Backup

  • Make a copy of the SKB file first.
  • Rename the copied file from .skb to .skp.
  • Open the renamed copy instead of the original backup file.
  • Save it under a new project name once it opens correctly.

When the Backup Is Older Than You Need

That is still better than a fully unreadable main file. Recover the last stable state first, then compare it with any exports, cloud revisions, or files that teammates may still have.

After Recovery, Export What You Need

Once the model opens, create the downstream formats right away. Use SKP to OBJ for mesh work, SKP to GLB for preview and web, or SKP to DWG for CAD-oriented handoff.

If the backup itself is missing or the active file now says Unexpected File Format, continue with this recovery path. If the original file lived in OneDrive or on removable media, review why that storage pattern is risky.

Common Questions

Short answers to the most common follow-up questions on this workflow.

What is an SKB file?
An SKB file is SketchUp's backup copy of a model. On Windows it is usually created in the same folder as the main SKP file.
How do I open an SKB backup?
Make a copy, rename the copied file from .skb to .skp, and open that renamed copy instead of changing the original backup file.
Will the backup contain the latest changes?
Not always. It usually contains an earlier stable save, so you may lose some recent edits, but it is often far better than a fully unreadable SKP file.
